I am currently offering personalised swim lessons at Stratford Leisure Centre
You can now book 121 lessons with me at the leisure centre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, on a Thursday evening.
Who can book
These ‘private’ lessons are perfect for:
- Children already swimming with Everyone Active who want one-on-one help to ‘boost’ their skills and move up to the next stage
- Neurodivergent children who prefer to swim away from a group environment (I teach those with autism, ADHD, PDA and anxiety)
- Children with physical needs who may need one-on-one support to practise water-based exercises
- Children who have never had a swimming lesson or who feel nervous in water
I will be providing these lessons in the smaller ‘teaching’ pool which is away from the main bulk of the group lessons – this will be helpful for any children who have previously found larger pools overwhelming from a sensory perspective.
With just one teacher in the water focused entirely on them, I find that children do learn swim skills incredibly quickly in a 121 lesson setting – we can really work on their individual goals and meet their needs with parents nearby for emotional support if needed.
Transitioning to group lessons
Most of my experience as a swim teacher has been supporting children who prefer to swim away from a large group, want their parent closer, or who benefit from a smaller pool (“the leisure centre isn’t for us”).
I am an advocate for individualised learning but, still, it is incredibly important that children are given the opportunity to join group lessons in longer-distance pools if they can. Only then can they achieve greater distance swims (without having to stop and touch the side), learn correct jumping and diving practises and be better prepared for an open water environment.
These initial 121 lessons will be perfect for those who haven’t quite joined group lessons yet as they can grow their skills with me and eventually I can help them to transition across to learning alongside their friends. Often with a friendly teacher, great communication with parents, thorough teacher-to-teacher handover and a supportive environment, I have found that this move is often more achievable than you think. Then – quite rightly – children with additional needs who don’t need 121 support can benefit from the same social group setting as their peers. They deserve to be included.
